Between the rain and the warmer snaps the abundance continues in the garden.  It is such a great time of year to see the green thriving, cabbages putting on their heads.  head lettuce sitting peacefully gathering autumn sugars and an array of roots.  Even though it is starting to be soup weather the peppers are still hanging in with the herbs for tasty sautes.

Even with all the rain it has been a great fall.  There has been so much opportunity for 2015 garden prep.  The last of the garlic went in this week and the cover crops are getting a chance to really take off.  The growing season for this area has been great for veggies this year and we have been loving the rewards and dishes it has brought and continues to bring.

This week NoMad Farms offered the first week of its fall shares.  These are offered on a week by week basis.  If you are interested in receiving late season fresh produce please contact us.  Each share is $25 per week for a full share(1/2-3/4 bu) or $15 per week for a half share (1/4-1/2 bu). A full share will have 9-10 items typically and a half share will have 5-6 items.  If you are interested we will put you on our mailing list and send out a weekly reminder of our availability.  Sign up for the whole fall extension until it is over or make a more week by week basis

Bringing in the Rain … Bringing in the Veggies

So we have plenty of rain now.  This has been a great year for cover crops.  Next year’s early onions and garlic are  going great.  This warmer fall has been wonderful for the fall garden also.   As we start to settle into cooler temperatures and the speed of everything slows, it is nice to still be able to enjoy the garden without all the layers of the growing season.  Not much planting, weeding, cultivating just harvest and eat.  It is the great time of year.  Spring is a great time but it is filled with the pressure of getting ready for the up coming summer push.  Fall is the opposite.  It has the the relaxed garden activities with under tones of the upcoming relaxing winter.

This week NoMad Farms offered the first week of its fall shares.  These are offer on a week by week basis.  If you are interested in receiving late season fresh produce please contact us.  Each share is $25 per week for a full share(1/2-3/4 bu) or $15 per week for a half share (1/4-1/2 bu). The Beginning of the End of the Beginning

As work begins to move away from the garden we also start to wrap up our garden prep for this spring.  Breaking ground is rounding completion and bare ground is covered with its winter blanket of crimson clover and rye.  Small overwinter sweet onions are peeking up to remind us of next years’  harvest and garlic cloves are dropping into the ground at any free opportunity.

Things seem to ramp up slightly this time of year in the way an engine may as it nears the end of its fuel supply.  Just a little longer until we shelve this season and relax into the winter to digest everything and prepare for next year.

We do have fall share available however.  Contact us if you are interested in receiving greens and roots for the remaining weeks of the garden.  We have half shares for $15 (typically 4-5 items/ 1/4-1/2 bushel) and full shares for $25 (typically 9-10 items 1/2 – 3/4 bushel).  We are offering these on a week by week basis.

Round About Fall Day Dreaming

Enter Store Here

So… we are now into a time for sowing.  Sow the thoughts and seeds of the upcoming year.  For the western world the New Year is January 1, for the Chinese calendar the New Year is February 19th and for soil workers the new year is right now.  This is the time for bed prep, some early spring seed and cover sowing and garden/field mapping and building.  Doing these things now lets the image of the upcoming year crystalize with the winter’s frosts and snow.  Focusing on transition management creates flow in the garden.  When we focus on starting everything in the spring and putting everything to bed in the fall opportunities are lost.  It is the equivalent of navigating a street with four stop signs in a row as opposed to 4 round-abouts.  So much time and energy is spent to start and stop.  To always keep something moving and the soil primed is beneficial in so many ways.

However, finding the balance that allows for continued movement while acknowledging and respecting the contemplative inwardness and slowness of winter is critical for creative health.  So, in a time of forward thinking, rather than the reactionary improv of the summer, we begin our winter stew.  Something to nibble and taste through the cold still months and then benefit from as the days lengthen and the ground thaws.

…And… as long as we give ourselves plenty of space to create the garden still feeds us through the fall season with very little effort.  NoMad Farms’ garden is still very much up and providing the fall sustenance.  We have fall shares to offer on a week by week basis.  If you are interested in a fall share please contact us and let us know.  The price is $25 for a 1/2 to full bushel of greens, roots, fruits and maybe even some nuts, available for pick up or delivery ($5 delivery fee).  We also are introducing half shares this fall.  These are $15 for a 1/4 to 1/2 bushel of the same variety as the full shares, only half the size. We will have these available for the remainder of the growing season, until the sweet sugars of fall fade to winter.

Happy Autumnal Equinox everyone.  It has been a great year and a great end to a great year.  This was the first week we pulled sweet potatoes out and the peanuts are swelling in the ground.  Pecans are falling from the trees and we tasted the first of the years persimmons.  Ground for next year is being prepped and covered for the winter and the garlic is being nestled into its winter bed.  It is a wonderful time.  Its the yearly equivalent to that peaceful time around dusk after dinner when the day is done, everyone is fed and the dishes are put away.  There are still a few loose ends but its a time to relax a bit before really getting ready for bed. Everything coming into balance and the out breath of the summer push is over.

The equinoxes are always a nice feeling.  They always bring with them that crossing over.  The light at the end of the tunnel.  The new semester of the year is to begin and the last semester behind us.  It is peaceful.  A time to relax.  A time to rest.  A time to ease towards the next move into a peak solstice.  The walnuts are on the ground.  The leaves are turning.  The last hay is getting put up.  The corn is starting to be shelled.  The mists of deep fall are hovering above the evening ground and the fog is there as a morning blanket.  The peace of the evening dusk before the nightfall of the solar year.  Happy Equinox.  May it be restful for your mind, body, soul and spirit.

Fall Into The New Pace

Enter Store Here

After the going going going of the summer season.  The initial shock of a slower pace can be kind of jolting.  By the time the season is going full force and is carrying its own weight it can take a while to naturally slow down.  However,  there are only so many months in the year and we only have so long before the next season hits.  So while our will and drive may be a steady stream of force and motion the seasons hit like waves.

Coasting to slow down is rarely an option as there is generally that one event that really brings the seasonal change home.  Upper 40 degree nights and chilly mornings are so lovely this time of year.  They are just the wave to put this train back on its rails and slow things down. As we careened through the end of August the fall has hit and brings us back to ground.  Now we find the time to remember all the things we have not been able to get around to accomplishing.

Everything the summer has brought is able to be digested and incorporated with all the plans made last winter.  Then on to the autumnal equinox to preview the tasks of the coming year.

Well Isn’t that Special… A Harvest Moon

Enter Store Here

We pulled some of the row cover back this week on our fall garden and there lay the reward.  A fall garden is so pleasant.  All the greens and roots of the spring without the bugs and some added sweetness.  In essence on a sweet to bitter spectrum, spring moves sweet to bitter and fall moves bitter to sweet.  Spring is easy to start and difficult to keep going and fall is difficult to start but once it gets going it is wonderful… even through the frost.

We pulled some winter squash and ate some fall fruits.  We enjoyed some fall apples and the beginning of the end of the tomatoes.  It is a time for free choice browsing.  To get discouraged by weeds and work at this point is trivial.  It is just a matter of time.  The sun is on our side.

Fall is lovely.  It is the annual reward everyone receives just for you being here and you being you.  Once a year earth and sun give all the kids on the team their trophy banquet.  The reward for their efforts…  The fall harvest.  Happy Harvest Moon everyone.  You earned it.

Happy Labor Day

Enter Store Here

So, Happy Labor Day everyone.  Hope it was filled with rest and relaxation.  Walking through the garden this week showed the manifestation of the fall garden.  All the work that has gone into sowing the fall crop has paid off and we have definitely had no shortage of rain.  It is nice to stroll through the garden to set a mood.  Even on a day that is hot and sticky strolling through the beginnings of the fall greens can bring the comfortability of fall.

These are the days to dig deep and push that last month out to close down this year and get ready for the next.  It is the time when fall is the savior but we can’t sit down just yet.  It is the time that winters respite is in site but there is still so much to do before the slumber comes.  It is the time where a hot day can make you want to pack it in but you can’t.  It is the final rally.  So, if you get a minute to thank a producer at a market or any other location this is the time of year a little encouragement can go a long way.

In the store the vendors of Peddlers’ Produce have a great selection.  Elkhorn Fresh Farm has beautiful garlic.  Hosey Honey has some of their best honey available as does Fritz’s Apiary.  Fritz has been beekeeping for 20 years and loves his bees, this is apparent in the taste and quality of the honey.  Check out our vendors page and Fritz’s Apiary to see Fritz’s honey for only $10/lb.  Add it to your veggie box or order by itself.

Well … at Least the Days are Getting Shorter

Who here is ready for the cool fall weather to be back?  Right here.  All season it has felt like we have had one foot in the previous month and one foot in the next.  We got our glimpse of September and now we sit in the middle of July.  However,  the leaves are starting to turn a little and even beginning to fall on the ground.  Apples are here and the sweet refreshens of the apples and watermelons help curb the stickiness of the heat and humidity.

IMG_0597   IMG_0600   IMG_0599   IMG_0598

The really great thing is the availability of the produce.  The days are noticeably shorter which is at least giving some relief to the fall produce that is starting to grow and the we have definitely had plenty of rain.  So the summer fruits are thriving and the fall garden is coming in which will makes for an outright full buffet.  Before we know it the crisp cool nights will be back and reaping the harvest for a full spread meal served outside will be the pay off of the late season wet heat.  Until then we have watermelons to keep us cool and tomato sandwiches to keep us full.

In the garden summer harvest still hums along.  We have greens, pepper, tomatoes, beans, roots, potatoes, garlic, herbs and melons.  The feast continues on its own course.  We are at that point that we are getting ready to push the clutch in and coast smoothly into the red light.  The garden is busy with activity with sowing and ground prepping for next season.  Cultivation and weeding are slowing and the space left for the fall is quickly filling.  So far so good with the weather in August. These past few weeks have been wonderful for moisture for the new fall beds and have eased the stress on some of the summer fruits bringing them new life.  Apples are nearing the point of harvest and melons are coming in strong.

It is a nice time of year.  The humidity lingers to remind us that summer is still close at hand but the drizzly rains and overcast cool nights reminds us that perhaps fall is a little nearer at this point.  There is never any telling what is in store for the next day or where nature will take us but she has been great to us so far.  We are grateful.
