The Transitions

The management of the garden season is navigating a series of transitions.  As the season begins to close things move from being their most complicated to being more simple.  At the peak we are sowing, cultivating, prepping, harvesting and planning.  As we move closer to fall these activities begin to fall away.  The first to go is the same action that is the first to start in the garden, the sowing.  As NoMad Farms garden moves closer to fall we start to sow the last of our sequential plantings for the season.  Just as it is sometimes hard to push ourselves at the beginning of the season to ramp up our actions at an appropriate speed to stay at pace with the lingthening and warming days of spring, it is difficult at time not to just want to close it all down abruptly when we reach a certain point in August and September.

However,  navigating this series of end of season transitions in a way that is gradual and elongated ensures that our fall production for our families and our customers will be there for as long as possible.  In the spring stretching the early “ramping up” transition out helps ensure that we will be the most prepared for the peak season push.  Staying comfortable in the transitions can be difficult.  It is easy to want to just get any transition over with and move on to the next.  However, in gardening just like life patience is a virtue and embracing all of the nuances of these transitions in the long run has its rewards.  So,  we begin to sow the last of our sowings and start to look at prepping our over winter beds and start to think about prepping the spring beds.  We also continue to harvest the fruits of peak summer.
