So on the farm, its summer. We are sticking with the Chinese Calendar’s assessment of seasonal changes. So… Mulch… and more mulch…. Moving into summer it feels good to be able to start getting the heavy mulch down. With our successful hay operation a few weeks ago we now have the material to give the garden a healthy dose of mulch for going into the heavy summer season. The cucumbers and squashes are all coming on nicely. Our summer beds are well under way and sequential lettuces have continued to be successful. That is a personal success for NoMad Farms. The peas are winding down and little green sun gold tomatoes are appearing on the vines, a definite sign that the summer peak season is nearing.
Just to reiterate. Being able to get heavy mulch down going into peak season feels so great. Whether it is wet, muddy, and humid or hot, dry, crusty, and arid; mulch makes it all so much more bearable and relaxed. It is so easy to let peak season just roll you over. It will be nice if this mulching sets us up to NOT be so steamrolled. Maybe it will or maybe it won’t, but we will have given it a go. At some point in peak season when you have cultivated and weeded all the beds and less than a week later the ground is seized and pig weed is heading out like it has been months since you were in the garden, all you can do is laugh and fight the urge to scream.
Peak season is nearing. Only mulch can save us now. So, here we go.
