With the most perfect planting weekend so far this season NoMad Farms was ready for action. The weather was perfect, the soil was perfect, the signs were perfect with a root sign coupled with a descending, not quite full, waxing moon. All of our transplant greens waiting for an opportunity to stretch their legs in new ground got their wish. Several hundred feet of transplant greens and herb seed went in the ground with 600 feet of root crop seeds being sown. So, greens, beets, turnips, salad mix, cilantro, dill, carrots, leeks, bunching onions, potatoes and onion sets all were tagged in for action. It was an exciting weekend and all field operations went off smoothly with only a few minor hiccups. It’s a good feeling to see the garden move from amorphous towards definition. It is even better knowing that fresh food is 25 to 40 days away. Days like these get us hungry and inevitably in field topics of conversation move towards recipes and cooking plans.
As evidenced below, we wore-out our staff as all efforts were focused on moving the hardened-off greenhouse inventory to the soil. Merriment also abound and we fully readied ourselves for the Easter weekend break. All of our preparation paid off and we threaded the spring planting window. This upcoming week’s rain adds to the serendipity of the planting and sowing and it is all tucked in nicely behind a tax-day blood moon and several lovely spring showers (hopefully keeping it overcast enough to help navigate the Wednesday morning frost/freeze). Couldn’t ask for much more. It was a great weekend.
